Objectives - Health
Promote wellbeing and healthy lifestyles within local communities
Our Health Programme will;
1. Engage over 4,000 targeted sedentary and semi-sporty young people in physical activity sessions.
2. Improve over 12,000 children's levels of physical activity developing their understanding and knowledge of healthy eating habits and lifestyles.
3. Recruit Health Manager to drive and oversee the strategic development of all health programmes.
4. Have a dedicated full-time staff delivering Family Lifestyle Intervention Programme (FLIP) throughout Derbyshire.
5. Undertake a research programme in partnership with Leeds Carnegie to evaluate Football Club based health programmes.
DCITC have through its delivery programme seen the benefits that physical activity has on children and adults health and wellbeing. Over the past three years we have begun to work closer with Schools Sports Partnerships, Local Authorities and Primary Care Trusts to develop programmes of work that engage people in physical activity and re-enforce positive attitudes toward healthy living and lifestyles.
Two flagship programmes (The Movement and Family Lifestyle Intervention programme (FLIP) have been developed through such partnerships to challange the alarming rise in physical in-activity levels and obesity in young people. The Movement has, since its inception in 2008, increased exercise participation levels by 19% amongst 11-16 year old girls, had 2600 girls have joined the Movement through its online membership, engaged 750 girls in dance programme (many of whom were new to dance) and held 2 Rock Your Body Street Dance Challenge competitions in 2009 & 2010 with 436 girls entering the street dance competition and over 500 spectators attending each dance final.
Building on the huge success we plan to continue delivery of an innovative programme of sports, physical activity and dance, to increase participation amognst 11-16 year old inactive girls (target market) in sports, by 5% each year. The Movement Project Manager will take on the role of Health Manager to drive and oversee strategic development of all DCITC health programmes. The Movement brand will be expanded to include all health delivery and the website www.themovementderby.co.uk will provide a central point of information on sport, physical activity and health for young people throughout Derbyshire.
Within our health delivery we plan to have a dedicated full-time staff delivering Family Lifestyle Intervention Programmes (FLIP) throughout Derbyshire. This delivery team will engage eith 3000 young people each year delivering a multi-skills programme, promoting lifelong sports participation and improving children's self-esteem.
An ongoing aim will be to recruit young people to support all aspects of our programme development and delivery, training young people to be peers mentors, passing on positive messages and promoting the programme to their peers. An aspirational target has been set to develop a health facility at Pride Park Stadium. The plan is to identify potential funding to utilise vacant space at Pride Park building classrooms, a kitchen, a gym and meeting rooms.
There are two significant issues that will need to be addressed over the coming 12 months. The one year funded pilot programme for FLIP will end in July 2011. We have 3 full-time staff currently delivering the FLIP programme. It is unclear at the moment whether the funding will be secured for additional delivery. Another issue arising with the programme is the uncertainty around our partners Derbyshire PCT and Amber Valley and Erewash School Sport Partnerships.
The Movement Funding from all partners is due to finish in September 2011. Additional funding has been secured to maintain the programme until April 2013. With extension funding secured we as an organisation now have time to identify additional funding to supplement the programme. The plan will centre on extending the programme into Derbyshire and utilising existing core delivery staff to take on aspets of the delivery programme. To support and expand the wider health iniatives within DCITC office, the Movement Project Manager will take on the role of Health Manager and will drive forward all our delivery programmes under the Movement brand.
