Happy New Year from The Movement!

2010 was a busy and exciting year for The Movement. Here’s some of our biggest highlights along with what’s new for 2011!
Sporting Oscar Nomination
The Movement was shortlisted for a Sport Industry Award alongside some of the biggest names in sport. The awards recognise the best the sport business has to offer in marketing, PR, sponsorship, new media, publishing, advertising and design. The Movement joined esteemed projects from Manchester United and Everton Football Club in the Community Programme Award category at a star-studded event in London in May 2010. Even though the project didn’t win, it was highly commended.

Rock Your Body Street Dance Challenge and Rock Your Voice 2010
An audience of around 600 cheered on the finalists of the Rock Your Body and Rock Your Voice Challenges at an electrifying event at The Assembly Rooms in October.
Freshmonds were crowned Rock Your Body winners and Elisha Cooper scooped the top Rock Your Voice accolade – a new dimension to the competition that aims to seek out Derby’s top female vocal talent.
The hunt starts for the next Movement Dance Crew
The Movement team is busy planning 2011’s Rock Your Body and Rock Your Voice Challenges, which aim to get even more girls involved. Heats will run in Spring and the grand final will take place at the beginning of July. Pencil it in your diary and we’ll send you an invitation with all the details nearer the time!
Freshmonds, the current Movement Dance Crew have been busy performing at events throughout the city including the Young People’s Show at The Assembly Rooms, a Future Lights event at Deda and in front of a 7000 crowd at Pride Park Stadium. The girls will continue to showcase their talents this year at U-Dance East Midlands and at the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Scheme Ceremony and the LPSA National Conference along with Elisha.
Movement Multi Media
Giving girls the chance to practically develop journalism, design, web development and creative skills is the key aim of The Movement’s new Multi Media course.
It collaborates with The Movement’s web development, design and print companies to provide a valuable short course for girls interested in these professions. It also aims to build confidence and other transferable communication skills.
The first course was successfully piloted with five girls in October half term and will be repeated in February half term and during other school holidays.
We are delighted that BBC Sports Presenter, Jacqui Oatley is endorsing the programme. She met with the pilot girls at Pride Park to give a talk on broadcast journalism and interviewing techniques. She said:
"I wish there was something like that (Movement Multi Media) when I was at school! A combination of being able to ask lots of questions and having a go at the practical side themselves is the way to go."
Empowerment days
Pedalling up fruit smoothies, throwing boxercise punches and perfecting the art of manicures are just some of the activities sampled at da Vinci Community College’s empowerment day in November. These events aim to introduce The Movement and give girls the chance to have a go at activities they may not have tried before. 500 year 7 and 8s experienced Movement activities last year and an empowerment day for Saint Benedict’s is planned for February 2011.
Leadership Training
The Movement has supported girls who don’t normally get involved in sport into leadership courses, community research qualifications and volunteering opportunities. Cycle Derby was so impressed with volunteers from Sinfin Community School that they have requested their help again at the National Cyclo-cross Championships in 2011 at Moorways. Derby Moor pupils also proved invaluable at last year’s Sport Relief event.
Movement Challenge Pilot
40 girls from West Park, Sinfin, Saint Benedict’s and Derby Moor schools took part in The Movement’s four-week diary challenge last summer. The challenge aimed to boost activity levels to 60 minutes a day – the recommended amount for under 16s. The winning diary won a £50 Westfield voucher. A selection of diary entries can be viewed online at https://www.themovementderby.co.uk/girls/exercise/the-movement-challenge
The Movement is building the pilot results into a new ‘walking’ challenge that includes a self esteem programme, set to launch in Spring 2011. Look out for more information in the next email bulletin.
More Online
The growth in popularity in social media has propelled The Movement to develop Movement Tube and Facebook pages to creatively engage with young people. Step by step exercise clips in boxercise, street dance, sit ups and other moves have high viewing figures on its dedicated Movement You Tube Channel and a new Facebook page is already getting girls involved in Movement events and activities. The Movement For Boys
The Movement worked in partnership with Derby County in the Community, Cycle Derby and Splash Fit to deliver 20 weeks of alternative activities for lads last year. 250 boys took part in grass boarding, indoor and outdoor climbing, mountain and trials cycling, box fit and circuits.
The school and community based activities ran on Wednesday and Friday evenings and through lunch and after-school clubs at da Vinci Community College and Derby Moor Community Sports College.
The Movement will continue to work with da Vinci this year, starting with a 10 week programme of box fit, smoothie making, climbing, trials biking, Taekwondo and Splash Fit.
A big thank you to...
All the organisations and individuals who have supported The Movement so far including Derby County in the Community, Derby City Council, Football Foundation, Premier League, Westfield Derby, Boots, Deda and Nike UK.
