A Derby County in the Community scheme to encourage girls in Derby to get active has been nominated for a national award.

The Movement, a partnership between Derby County in the Community and Derby City Council is up for the Coca-Cola Community Club of the Year award, one of the prizes to be presented next month at the Football League Awards 2011.

The Movement

The Movement was set up in 2009 to address the high percentage of inactive girls in Derby. It uses innovative methods including a website, street dance programme and a magazine edited by girls to help 11 to 16-year-olds lead happy, healthy and active lifestyles.

Other initiatives include a multi media course and sessions that combine physical activity with beauty, fashion and style. Top choreographer and dancer Kymberlee Jay has backed The Movement’s dance programme and is an influential role model for young women, encouraging nearly 500 girls to have a go at street dance and enter the project’s annual Rock Your Body Street Dance Challenge.

With some 2,400 girls joining The Movement through a special online membership card which gives them discounts on activities and beauty services the award nomination is very much merited, according to Cllr Alan Grimadell, Derby City Council Cabinet member for leisure and culture.

“We are delighted The Movement is so widely recognised for its pioneering work in getting inactive young people into exercise,” said Cllr Grimadell. “It uses novel methods to engage young girls by teaming popular pastimes with physical activity to make exercise more appealing. It is a credit to the strong partnership and hard work of Derby County in the Community and Derby City Council.”

John Vicars, vice president of operations for Derby County FC and chair of trustees for Derby County in the Community, said: “We are delighted to have once again been recognised nationally for the great community delivery of our DCITC team.

“The Movement programme has become a flagship scheme for us and we are delighted to be able to continue our partnership with Derby City Council delivering innovative and effective programmes that are having such a huge positive impact within our local community.”

The Football League Awards celebrate excellence on and off the pitch across the league’s 72 clubs and the winners will be announced at a gala ceremony at The Brewery, London, on Sunday 20 March.

The latest national award nomination follows The Movement’s recommendation for last year’s Sports Industry Awards.
