The Movement Inspires Girls To Get Active

The Movement - a partnership between Derby County in the Community and Derby City Council has been granted the Inspire mark by the London 2012 Inspire programme. The London 2012 Inspire programme recognises innovative and exceptional projects that are directly inspired by the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

The Movement helps girls in Derby live happy, healthy and active lifestyles by encouraging those who don’t enjoy sport to take part in more unusual activities such as dance, Zumba, boxercise and hulaerobics.  Since the project started in 2009, it has increased physical activity levels in 11 to 16 year old females by 19%.

It’s pioneering methods, which include an interactive website, a dance programme, a media course, leadership training and activities that combine exercise with beauty and fashion, has resulted in over 2500 girls signing up to become Movement members.
A new Proud to be ME self esteem programme is set to launch this Autumn inspired by the 2012 Games’ vision to encourage people to fulfil their potential.  It will help girls to build confidence through a variety of workshops and web-based resources, supporting them to take part in more physical activity.
Amongst the new programmes set to start early next year is Challenge ME – a ‘try it out’ sport challenge that encourages girls to give new activities a go and produce pod cast journalist-style reports.
Seb Coe, Chair of the London Organising Committee of the Olympic Games and Paralympic Games said:

“The Inspire programme is ensuring the legacy of the 2012 Games starts now as projects like The Movement are enabling girls in Derby to make positive life changes.”

Tom Glick, Chief Executive of Derby County Football Club added:
“Derby County in the Community’s flagship community project The Movement shows the great way in which the innovative partnership between DCitC and Derby City Council works together. So many girls are inspired by the project and it continues to inspire more young women to lead healthier lifestyles through physical activity, eating well and boosting their confidence levels. We’re proud of The Movement and all that it achieves in bringing young females closer towards enjoying a healthy way of life.”

Councillor Hilary Jones, Cabinet Member for Leisure and Cultural Development at Derby City Council said:

“This high level recognition builds on the national awards already received by The Movement.  With nearly a year to go to the start of the Games, we’re delighted that The Movement is already using the power of London 2012 to get more girls being active.”
