COUNT DOWN TO CITY DANCE FINAL

The Rock Your Body Street Dance Challenge 2010 has selected its finalists to go head to head at an event on 31 October to win a trip to London to design their own Nike trainers and take part in a dance session at Pineapple Studios.

34 groups made up of 155 girls aged 11 to 16 have entered the competition organised by The Movement - a partnership between Derby County in the Community and Derby City Council’s b-active initiative.  They have honed their dance skills at The Movement’s Step Up 2 Dance sessions and battled through several heats throughout the summer.

Eight groups - Platinum, Ammunition, Essence, Eccentrick, Infuzion, Retribution, Addiction and Freshmonds - will go through to the final at The Assembly Rooms.  They scored the highest marks for dynamics, style, difficulty, musicality, group cohesion and creativity.

Top UK choreographer and dancer, Kymberlee Jay is returning to present the event having backed The Movement’s dance programme from the start.  She has worked with Nike and Madonna and has helped The Movement’s dance co-ordinators develop amazing routines for girls in Derby to learn.  She said:

“I’m over the moon that girls in Derby have embraced dance as a way to keep fit and healthy.  The talent showcased last year was impressive and I’m looking forward to seeing this year’s groups grow in confidence and ability.”

Young female vocalists from The Movement’s Rock Your Voice competition will perform at the event and 2009 winners, Xplicit will also take to the stage before handing over the Movement Dance Crew 2010 title.

Xplicit has enjoyed a busy year, wowing audiences at events throughout the region and reaching the final of another prestigious dance competition – U-Dance.

Ammunition group member, Olivia Morton, (13) believes their determination has got them this far:

“Our dance routine for the final has lots of energy.  It’s our dream to win Rock Your Body and we’ve devoted all our spare time to it.  Our Movement Dance Co-ordinator, Kristy has been great and she really believes in us.”

Sharon Dale, Project Manager for The Movement concluded:

“It’s fantastic that lots of different girls have entered the Rock Your Body Street Dance Challenge, including those who’ve never danced before.  The live final promises to be an exciting night!”
